Recent Advances in the treatment of GVHD

Very interesting medical article talking about all the different stages of GVHD. I did not know the first sign of GVHD could happen before the donor cells are infused! What happens is that the preconditioning chemotherapy damages the cells creating an inflammatory response. Also, damage to the GI mucosa permits bacteria to enter the circulation through the GI lining. The article recommends strengthening the GI mucosa barrier before preconditioning with growth factors.

Well, there are natural ways to strengthen the GI mucosa barrier. One is Vitamin A and Beta Carotene. Vitamin A from organ meats (liver and kidney) and fats (butter and egg yolks). Beta Carotene from carrots, spinach, broccoli and cabbage. These fat soluble vitamins are important for epithelial tissue (respiratory tract, gastrointestinal tract, genitourinary tract, skin, and cornea).

My children love to make carrot juice and eat broccoli. We've never tried liver and kidney but we do eat more butter these days and I'm trying to eat more eggs which David's nutritionist recommended.

Hi Aimee!

Thanks so much for your prompt response to my question. I am learning so much by reading your blog--and am interested in the article you cite in this post as well! Was hoping you might remember where you saw this one too (and, let me know if it's a bother). Thanks for your great work--and blessings on your path.

Wow, I didn't even know that the blog titles were links--thanks again. I am getting bleary eyed from all the reading I'm doing, but with the lovely feeling of hope that good information is gifting me with.
